Venice Surf Report 07/16/08 Christian Keeping Busy

There is some swell out there today but it looks very inconsistent and myabe waist high at best.

It also looks very jumbled up and disorganized. So, I guess go if you want to enjoy a little sunshine and a beautiful morning, but keep your expectations low.

2-3 out on either side, lots of lookers but not many takers.

Saw Christian and some of the boyos as they woke up from their pile of blankets and rags and things over behind the bathrooms. They have to wake up at a certain time as the people who clean that area every morning do so with a fire hose, and if the boyos are sleeping well, they get treated like a gum wrapper or a used condom, and being woken by a fire hose is apparently not much fun.

So, as I was walking off the pier he came walking up to the picnic tables carrying what looked like a fishing tackle box.

"So, Christian, what do you got there; a tackle box? I didn't know you like to fish" I said.

"Nah, I got something way cooler than that. Check it out."

And sure enough it was something way cooler than a tackle box.

Yes, Christian is carrying the Fishel Military Play Set, complete with it's own carrying case.

"Wow - pretty cool" I said. "But it says here that it is for ages 3 and up; don't you think that's a little dangerous for you, you know, once you're drunk?"

"Nah, we already lost most of the small pieces, all we got left now are the helicopetrs and the walls and some jeeps. But it's pretty fucking cool, don't you think?"

"Definitely" I replied. "Who's the best at it so far, you know, when you guys play war?"

"Me, of course. After all, I was in the Marine Corps for quite a few years. These other guys are good but they lack the training I have had, in tactics and stuff."

Hey was very, very proud of his new toy, and asked me to get several close-ups.

Should keep them busy, I suppose. As I left them they were setting up for the first battle of the day and I slipped him a few bucks to get the day off to a proper start with a Steel Reserve 211. If you see them ask to see the thing, it's obviously his pride and joy.

My comments are I sold both of them today at a loss, but not as big a loss as if I had held them for the whole day.

IMHO this is a classic sucker's rally - unemployment is still growing, housing starts continue to slow, sales and prices still declining and weakness starting to spread globally. So why shouldn't the market (and especially financials) be up 30% in two days.

I stil;l believe everything I said before, but you can't buck the crowd, and for now the crowd thinks fincials are in great shape.

I plan on buying both of these ETF's when they get back below the 50 day MAVG.

Hoenstly, people are fucking stupid. But until that's illegal, well, we just gotta do the best we can.
